Time Out

I've called a time out. We had to move suddenly due to conditions in Beirut. Now we're back in the US. Once things get sorted we'll have more music up. Happy 2009 to all!

Promenade 1

Promenade 1 is a soft rock etude for solo flute in E flat major. It has folk and latin elements, but the player should have in mind a light backbeat on quarter notes two and four.

New Piece Coming Soon

This next piece, which should be ready within a week, is in a mixed style. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but I guess it's folk and soft rock, which doesn't sound too appetizing. It's gentle with a beat, but then you get into "light rock" and "smooth jazz" (shout out to WJJZ in Philadlephia), but it's not that either. There is definitely a folk element to it. It's the fastest "birth" so far of the pieces here on the New Flute blog.

Latin 3

Latin 3 is a Latin-jazz etude for solo flute in A minor. The grace notes are important for creating a jazz flavor, but they are not essential. You might notice a few quotes from some classic rock songs. The first is from Journey's "Who's Crying Now," and the second is too famous to need identification.

Latin 3 has three parts to it. The first is melodic and legato in the style of Pat Metheny. The third part, beginning in bar 72, is more traditionally latin jazz, and evokes sounds of the Afro-Cubano style Dizzy Gillespie brought to America in the 1940s. The middle part is a long transition between the first and third.
